HOW MIKI DORA BECAME SURFINGS MOST LOVED AND HATED
Perhaps the most polarizing surfer of all time is Miki Dora.
Love him or hate him, his magnetic charisma and and dynamic surfing made him one of surfing's most talked about personalities, and his legend only seems to grow as the years go by.
SurfGuide magazine said in 1964 that "At the perfect surf spot on the perfect day, Miki Dora is probably the best surfer in the world."

The year 1990. The grand finale of the ASP world tour season and the most prestigious event in the surfing world, the 20th anniversary of the The Banzaii Pipeline Masters. The mood on the beach was somber, as we had just lost one of Pipelines favorite sons Ronnie Burns in a tragic motorcyle accident. WHO WON? TOM CURREN vs. MARK RICHARDS SUNSET BEACH 1985

The 1985 Billabong Pro Sunset Beach was held in a solid mix of north and west swells colliding onto the famous bowl of Paumalu. It was a time of change, with the old guard of Mark Richards, Rabbit and Shaun Tomson, getting taken out by the new guard of Tom Curren, Occy and Barton Lynch amongst others. But Hawaii, and Sunset beach in particular, favors experience over flamboyance, and on this da...
60 YEAR OLD MAN SURFING THE 4'8" DRIFTER?

I am also a big Chris Won fan and love riding stand up bodyboards. So trying to combine a surfboard with a boogie has been a goal of mine since the late 90's. SURFING'S GREATEST RIVALRY: KELLY SLATER x SHANE BESCHEN
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 месяца назад
1996. The rivalry reached fever pitch at the opening horn of the US Open final. Surf historians are spilt down the middle: Was Kelly Slater's paddle around interference the greatest tactical move ever, or did he do Shane Bexchen dirty? Drop your opinion in the comments. They were locked into a world title race against each other, and to call this merely a rivalry would be a major understatement...

Not many folks been with their lady as long as Mr and Mrs Alba. Says something huge about Salba and how it is possible to maintain a sense of kind humility and focus on empathy while becoming legend at a young age. Most dudes become self absorbed or addicted. Love for anything outside the pursuit is not a concern for them. Salba has always been an inspiration to me and only until recently had i been able to state why honestly.

I really domt know exactly what the rule says but Shane was standing up first. Obviously having the inside means nothing if you simply are back hoping a guy from the inside. I suppose the judges saw it more as they were getting up simultaneously, but they weren’t. This was from a time everything was going slaters way and he was being overscored. Beschen deserved at least one world title but he got robbed out of it by calls like this and overscoring slater.

Another guy keeping me stoked. My plan is to pass on the favour one day. Too many people think you have to stop at a certain age, so never try. If you look after yourself, choose your parents carefully, accept inevitable limitations and enjoy what you do there is a lifetime of joy ahead. Yes, luck is in the mix but it’s also generated by your life choices.

Here is another one that displays the real Miki. Mid 60s I was surfing and photographing the POP pier Cove, the south side later made famous by the Dogtown boys. Mostly just my friends and myself but Miki would show up on occasion. I also worked at the amusement pier running rides and games. Surf the mornings and go to work after. So Miki knew I was taking pics and wanted to look at them. He came to my place to check them out, visited for a while and talked story. Before he left he told me he was working at the Pussycat theater in Hollywood,a well known nudie movie house. He said to come by and he'd let me and friends in for free. So we showed up one night, asked for Miki and of course they never heard of him. Classssic. Left for Kauai shortly after that and never saw him again. When I read the book and articles about his exploits, the Pussycat scam, joke made total sense. Can only laugh.

1963 huge rainstorm caused my Santa Monica High School to be closed due to flooding during the week. WooHoo! A day to surf when everyone else was in school. I came through the Santa Monica canyon to the PCH,stopped at the light, and what the....I look out at State Beach and it's 8-10ft breaking off the outer reef! One guy out. Quickly forgot about going north, pulled into the parking lot and paddled out. When I get outside it's Miki all alone. We knew each other mainly from Malibu. It was just the two of us for hours,no one showed up. Totally a memorable day. He was fun to surf with, with no crowd involved. And a joy to watch the freedom with which he surfed those empty walls.

It’s interesting as I started skating in 88 and it was just before things changed in skateboarding. Still I love this type of skating to the new stuff. I surf because of Todd. He was always the kid I wanted to be like the most. I prefer to refer to him as "Cheshire." He had such a graceful, catlike style coupled with that mischievous grin to go along with his merry prankster of a personality (I always wondered why that wasn't the name he got pegged with, it always struck me as the obvious choice). He'd have had a field day with the photo sluts that so utterly dominate global culture today I can only imagine how much pleasure he'd derive from destroying influencers as skillfully as he destroyed an open canvas. I so miss that cat. His passing really atomized something essential in the surfing world and among all who knew him. Some relationships just got totally vaporized. Todd wasn't just the glue, he was the centrifugal force.
